CD & DVD REPLICATION

When preparing master for CD-R discs, we encourage you to check the buffer coefficient of the CD-R disc (minimally 70%). In case this is not possible, check the readability of the CD-R master on different disc players. We recommend that you deliver two masters, each made on different CD/DVD media device.

CD-R disc should be made according to the Yellow Book standard (standard, which denotes the way of arranging the written data on disc). Most commercial CD/DVD recording software use Yellow book standard. We do not recommend using special characters like č, š, ž in file names, for sometimes these discs do not work properly.

We encourage you to test each CD-R disc on different computers and if possible on different operating systems.

PRODUCT ORDER

In order to complete your order we need the following:

  • Master disc (CD-R, CD-ROM, CD-Audio, DVD-R, DVD-Video, DVD-ROM) or a DDP file.
  • Written order.
  • Copyright certificate (for Audio CD – Sazas).
  • CD or DVD artwork layout sent in high resolution pdf file
  • Prepress design sent in high resolution pdf file
  • Best proof or delivery order – in case where printing is ordered solely based on design or ordinary print, we do not hold any responsibility for the absolute printing precision.

Supplied CD-R or DVD-R masters must be previously reviewed by the client, for the content on the copied versions is equal to the one on the master disc!

In case where extra handling of master disc is needed, clients are obliged to send a written request and afterwards review and confirm the same.

TECHNICAL GUIDELINES FOR THE CD/DVD CONTENT PREPARATION

Content preparation for CD/DVD disc replication

The content of the replicated CD media is equal to the master disc content, which is why it is very important that master disc is made according to the received CD/DVD standards. In case you do not take into account this rule, it is possible the replicated discs would not work correctly or they will not work properly while using certain CD/DVD players.

Content preparation for CD/DVD disc replication

Please prepare the content for the CD/DVD replication in the following formats:

  • DDP file or
  • CD-R/DVD-R master

Supplied CD-R or DVD-R masters must be previously reviewed by the client, for the content on the replicated versions are equal to the one on the original disc. In order to flawlessly manufacture a working master (glass master and stamper), the supplied master must not hold any mechanical damages, fingerprints or scratches.

Content preparation for CD-ROM discs

Content preparation for CD-Audio discs

Master for CD-Audio disc must entirely meet Red Book CD standard demands. If a client sends a written request to manufacture master under different conditions, Silveco Ltd does not hold responsibility for any possible irregularities, which might occur during the transmission from the master disc (CD-R) to the glass master.

  • Maximum length for audio is 79 minutes.
  • Maximum headroom is 0 dB, minimum -2 dB.

ARTWORK LAYOUT PREPARATION

Technical Data for Artwork Layout Preparation

While preparing artwork layout we encourage you to follow the below written rules. In case the files are poorly prepared, errors can occur, as well as additional expenses and postponement of the agreed deadlines.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email  cd@silveco.com or by telephone: +386 1 500 11 30.

Graphic design computer software:

  • Adobe Illustrator – suitable for vector illustration
  • Adobe InDesign – suitable for creating artwork layout design (text, pictures, layout)
  • Adobe Photoshop – image processing software, not suitable for text
  • Corel Draw – suitable for vector illustration

We do not recommend using Nero Cover Design or any other Microsoft Office software for artwork layout preparation.

Colour space

For CD/DVD disc offset printing you can use only CMYK model or black and white colour space.
For CD/DVD disc screen-printing technology, you can use CMYK and Pantone Coated colour space. Namely, you can choose five different colours for print.
If necessary, we can also use Pantone colours with printed materials (CD covers).

Image application

Images you use for print have to be in CMYK colour mode (not RGB) and set to min. 150dpi resolution. In case images are not made in CMYK colour mode, unexpected and odd prints can occur! Do not use images in PICT or GIF format when working with InDesign or Illustrator software.

Design specifications

For design setup please use measurements as instructed on our website. If you have something new on your mind, please do not hesitate to ask for our assistance in the prepress review process.
We do not recommend using the same design or the same colours for the CD/DVD cover and for the CD/DVD disc artwork layout print. We use different technologies (offset/screen printing), different materials (paper/ plastics) and finally different colours (CMYK/Pantone). Same colours used for the CD/DVD cover and the CD/DVD disc artwork layout print will always differentiate.

Layout design delivery

Layout design should be delivered via email cd@silveco.com.

We accept layout design files in the following formats:

  • Adobe PDF – composite, CMYK, Press optimized
  • TIFF – CMYK; at least 300 dpi; when using black letters on a white background or if there is a letter code used in the design, resolution should be at least 450 dpi; file should not hold any layers

Together with the delivered file, a printed sample or best proof or delivery order must be provided as well – in case where printing is done following only the delivered design or from the basic print, we do not hold responsibility for the absolute printing accuracy. If no samples were provided along with the layout design, we do not hold responsibility for the possible errors (e.g. wrong montage, packaging, etc.)!

  • We can review colours based only on the delivered Best proof.
  • You also have to write basic information (telephone number, name, surname) about the client and the graphic designer.

Additional info on crop marks and bleeds

When designing materials for print, you must include 3mm bleed area. Use crop marks to define bleed area, which should be 3mm separated from the design itself.

Image application

Images you use for print have to be in CMYK colour mode (not RGB) and set to min. 300 dpi resolution. In case images are not made in CMYK colour mode, unexpected and odd prints can occur!

Usage of black colour for paper printing

If you use larger amounts of black colour for your design, we recommend the usage of rich black ink. Namely, this black colour is comprised of all CMYK colours. It assures your final product will be 100% black and not greyish!

For the rich black combination outcome we recommend:
C 60%+M 50%+Y 50%+K 100%=Rich Black
For black coloured text in regular size (4 pt – 30 pt), use only black colour (without other CMY). 100% black colour should be set by default to overprint.

Dizajne sprejemamo v naslednjih oblikah:

  • Adobe PDF – composite, CMYK, Press optimized,

PREPRESS REVIEW FOR CD/DVD DISCS

We use offset or screen printing technology for CD/DVD disc printing. Each has its own advantages and weaknesses, as seen in the table below.

CD/DVD Offset printing

CD/DVD Screen printing

Images
Raster is set to 70 lines per cm, which is an ideal solution for fine nuances and even bordering.
Raster is set to 47 lines per cm. Colour intensity varies from 20 to 80%. Moiré pattern can occur.
Larger monochromatic area
Not suitable for the printing of a larger monochrome surface due to thicker coating. The print may end up dappled.
Suitable for printing larger monochrome surfaces due to thicker colour coating.
Colours
The colour range is limited to CMYK colours. There is no possibility for Pantone colours usage.
We print all CMYK and Pantone Coated colours. Matte colour is reached with an extra matte varnish layer, which we generally do not recommend, for it can cause a different colour printing result.
Combination of raster and monochromatic area
Possible combination of raster and monochromatic area.
When using darker shades of Pantone colours, we do not recommend combining raster and full colour in one single screen. For the purpose of even colour coverage, sometimes we have to increase pressure in screen printing, which can consequently lead to raster overfilling.
White background
White colour is 118 mm wide and cannot undergo any change. There are no extra expenses for white background printing.
White colour is 118 mm wide. You can easily change it according to your wishes, e.g. use it only as a background for certain graphic elements, in order to emphasize CD/DVD silver background.

PREPRESS REVIEW FOR CD/DVD DISC OFFSET PRINTING

We recommend offset printing for CD/DVD discs in case where coloured images or design are composed of a great number of colours (e.g. photographs). We offer offset printing technology for CD/DVD discs in four basic colours (CMYK). Additionally, It is also possible to add white colour before the printing. White background is printed using a flexography technology and has a 118 mm wide fixed printing surface.

Prior to your order, please do not forget to emphasize if the printing with white background is necessary. Due to thinner colour layering, colours in offset printing are not as dense in coverage, and considering that CD or DVD disc is basically grey in colour, the result can be slightly darker shades of colour, than they are when printed on paper! We do not recommend using the same layout design for printing CD/DVD disc and its cover.

All images within the layout design must be converted into CMYK colour space!

Usage of black colour for CD/DVD disc layout design:

If you use larger amounts of black colour for your design, we recommend the usage of rich black ink. Namely, this black colour is comprised of all CMYK colours. It assures your final product will be 100% black and not greyish!

For the rich black outcome in the CD/DVD layout design offset printing we recommend the following combination:

For black coloured text in regular size, use only black colour (without other CMY). 100% black colour should be set by default to overprint.

If using dark background, we do not recommend small or thin letter styles.

In case of CD/DVD disc offset printing, raster is set to 175 lines per inch due to the thinner colour layering.

PREPRESS REVIEW FOR CD/DVD DISC SCREEN PRINTING

We recommend screen printing when using large monochromatic or two-coloured prints for CD/DVD disc artwork layout (e.g. only text and background). Colour layering is thicker than in the offset printing, thus offering stronger contrasts between different colours, which is recommended in some design cases.

We offer CD/DVD disc screen printing technology in five colours, and you can choose your colour selection from a Pantone Coated colour chart. We use glossy colours for printing, but if necessary, an additional print on CD/DVD discs with matte varnish is also available.

Rich black colour is not used in screen printing technology

Please be clear on which colours you have decided to use in your artwork design.

Due to the thicker colour layering, you must be very careful of the letter size and width. If letters or lines are to small in size, colour overfilling can occur in the area intended for letters or lines.

Please take into account:
Printing raster is set to 100 to 133 lines per inch. The colour strength if using this raster varies from 15% to 85%.
